Know your food seals and earn cash back
From dietary restrictions and allergens to lowering your carbon footprint, knowing what’s in your family’s food has become more important than ever. But all of those seals and certifications can get confusing.
This October, Ibotta is sharing the 411 – and some extra cash back – on foods that are Fair Trade, Certified Gluten-free, Non-GMO, and more. Here’s what some of the most popular seals mean for you and your family:
USDA Organic
Unlike some of the other seals on this list, this one is given by the federal government. Per the US Department of Agriculture, “Organic is a labeling term found on products that have been produced using cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that support the cycling of on-farm resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity.” This is based on soil, how animals are fed and raised, and how food is produced and handled. Find out more here.
Non-GMO Project Verified
According to nongmoproject.org, these Non-GMO products are simply those that contain less than .9% of genetically modified material. You can read their full standards doc here!
Kosher Certified
OK.org says “Kosher refers to a set of intricate biblical laws that detail the types of food that a Jewish person may eat and the ways in which it may be prepared.” These rules apply to meat, dairy and neutral foods and dictate not only what types of food can be consumed (cows, sheep, dairy from Kosher animals), but also how they are prepared. You can find more details here.
Halal
In order to meet the dietary practices of Islam, Halal certifications “confirm that foods fall in line with Islamic diet practices, which may refer to how an animal was slaughtered, whether a food includes alcohol, the cleansing of utensils, or many other guidelines,” according to verywellfit.com.
Fair Trade Certified™
Fair Trade Certified™ is a seal that “represents thousands of products, improving millions of lives, protecting land and waterways in 62 countries and counting. Purchases have sent $846 million to farmers and workers since 1999.” Check out their website here.
Certified Gluten-Free
Verywellfit.com also covers the Gluten-Free certification, which lets you know that a product contains less than 20 parts per million of gluten, depending on what organization gives it its certification. You can read more about that here.
