Head Back to School with Extra Cash

Back-to-school shopping season is one of the biggest shopping seasons of the year, second only to the winter holidays. And whatever your favorite students’ classrooms look like this year, they’ll still need new school supplies.

In 2020, parents and guardians are expected to spend $529 per child on school shopping, according to Deloitte’s annual back-to-school survey. That includes regular school supplies (think: books and backpacks), clothing and accessories, and computers and electronics. But this year, the organization also added a new spending category called “home/health” that includes coronavirus-related needs like hygiene and cleaning products and furniture for homeschooling.

Deloitte also found that 51 percent of parents are spending more on internet-based learning resources over last year — things like virtual tutors, subscriptions to e-learning platforms, and online classes.

With these potential new costs, parents are looking for every opportunity to save on back-to-school shopping. Ibotta is committed to supporting students and parents by putting cash back in their pockets.

1. Save on School Supplies

The most obvious way to save money when the kids go back to school is by cutting costs for school supplies themselves. Start by earning cash back on ACCO FIVE STAR products from their classic spiral notebooks (remember those?) to pencil pouches and light-up locker mirrors. Search for “FIVE STAR” in the Ibotta mobile app and add the offer to earn cash back at big-box stores like Walmart and Target as well as grocery stores and drug stores.

Save even more on school supplies when you use Pay with Ibotta at Walmart, Office Depot, and OfficeMax for a contact-free checkout. Simply tap the “Pay with Ibotta” button on the home screen of the mobile app, find the retailer name, enter the checkout amount, and present your gift card code to the cashier to pay and earn instant cash back.

2. Earn cash back on clothing

You’re going to want the perfect “first day of school” photo even if your kids aren’t going back to the classroom. Get cash for back-to-school fashions when you shop online or in-store with Ibotta at brands even picky teens will love: American Eagle, Aeropostale, DSW, Forever 21, Gap, Old Navy, Macy’s, Nike, TOMS and Under Armour.

3. Spend less on snacks and meals

School cafeterias are going to look a little different this fall, so be sure to pack healthy lunches and snacks for your students. Think: chocolate or vanilla flax-milk lunchbox cartons and dairy-free yogurt from Good Karma, bags of Sunsweet dried fruit, and protein-packed One Bars in kid-friendly flavors like birthday cake and s’mores.

If your kids will be learning at home, keep your kitchen stocked with easy meals and snacks like Malt-O-Meal® cereal, Horizon Organic milk and string cheese, Darigold yogurt and snacking cheese, and organic kids protein nutrition shakes and bars from Orgain. And don’t forget — parents need plenty of energy, too! Fuel your morning with RISE Nitro Cold Brew Coffee and beat the afternoon slump with SlimFast shakes, bars, snacks, and smoothie mixes, including options for diabetics and anyone following the Keto diet.

Ibotta Savers can earn cash back on all of these brands (and others!) by adding offers in the Grocery category of the Ibotta mobile app before going shopping (or before ordering groceries online for curbside pickup or delivery) and then redeeming their receipt in the app after checkout. Link your store loyalty account in the Ibotta app to make saving even easier.
